Themes Themes are big ideas that authors comment on throughout a work using tools such as context, setting, and characters. You will often be asked to write a literary analysis. Most books deal with multiple themes, some more obvious than others.
For instance, a flower bud might represent innocence; or autumn could represent the last years of a person's life. The use of an object or action to mean something more than its literal meaning.
In short stories the plot is usually centered around one experience or significant moment What is the most important event? Climax The climax is the point of greatest tension or intensity in the short story.
When does the climax take place? Does the author use a lot of symbolism? Characterization Characterization deals with how the characters in the story are described.
